Šuran families are usually Croats and they are mostly from Pazin area (Šurani), rarely Italians (iz Italy). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Pula and Pazin. In Korenići in Rovinj area every second inhabitant had the family name Šuran.
Prevalence
About 330 people with faimily name Šuran live in Croatia today, in 140 households. There were 250 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 30 percent. They are only located in in 15 Croatian cities and 30 other places, mostly in Pula (60), Porec (30), Fazana (30), Pazin (25), and in Tinjan in Pazin area (25).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
