In Croatia, Paljan families are generally Croats (from Cazma area ), very rarely Czechs, and . In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Garesnica. In Šimljanik in Cazma area every fourtieth inhabitant had the family name Paljan.
Prevalence
About 30 people with faimily name Paljan live in Croatia today, in 13 households. There were 40 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 40 percent. They are located in 7 Croatian counties, in 7 cities and two other places, mostly in Bjelovar (10), Zagreb (<10), Rijeka (<10), Kutina (<5), and in Korenica in Otocac area (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
