In Croatia, Čortan families are predominantly Serbs, rarely Croats (from Nasice area ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Obrovac area and in Otocac area. In Debelo Brdo in Obrovac area every ninth inhabitant had the family name Čortan.
Prevalence
About 40 people with faimily name Čortan live in Croatia today, in 30 households. There were 140 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased significantly. They are located in 6 Croatian counties, in 8 cities and 7 other places, mostly in Debelo Brdo in Obrovac area (15), Korenica in Otocac area (<10), Zagreb (<10), Pula (<10), and in Split (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1938 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
