Tolj families are Croats and they are mostly from Vrgorac. According to some sources they are from Velikog Prologa. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Vrgorac and in Bosanian Posavina (Bosanska Gradiska area). In Greda in Bosanian Posavina nearly every inhabitant had the family name Tolj.
Prevalence
About 830 people with faimily name Tolj live in Croatia today, in 320 households. There were 150 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number multiplied. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 27 cities and 54 other places, mostly in Orebic on the Peljesac peninsula (105), Zagreb (95), Osijek (90), Split (80), and in Stilja (75).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1933 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
