Merlin families are Croats and they are mostly from Oroslavje area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Labin. In Martinski in Labin area every twentieth inhabitant had the family name Merlin.
Prevalence
About 130 people with faimily name Merlin live in Croatia today, in 50 households. There were 140 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 10 percent. They are located in 9 Croatian counties, in 8 cities and 8 other places, mostly in Zagreb (80), Oroslavje (20), Strmec Stubicki in Oroslavje area (15), Markoci in Labin area (10), and in Labin (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 2007 in source Encyclopaedia of Croatian Surnames.
