In Croatia, Merklin families are generally Croats (from Pazin area ), very rarely Germans (also from Pazin area ), and . In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Pula and in Pazin area. In Borut in Pazin area every twentieth inhabitant had the family name Merklin.
Prevalence
About 30 people with faimily name Merklin live in Croatia today, in 8 households. There were 20 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 40 percent. They are located in two Croatian counties, two cities and four other places, mostly in Borut (10) and Debeljuhi (<10) in Pazin area, Fazana (<5), Valbandon (<5), and in Susak on the Island of Losinj (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1929 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
