Matijaš families are usually Croats and they are mostly from Trogir area , rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Trogir area and in Trogir. In places Vrsine and Marina in Trogir area every fifth inhabitant had the family name Matijaš.
Prevalence
About 790 people with faimily name Matijaš live in Croatia today, in 310 households. There were 700 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 10 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 26 cities and 60 other places, mostly in Vrsine in Trogir area (115), Split (105), Marina in Trogir area (100), Zagreb (60), and in Trogir (35).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
