Kokan families are almost entirely Croats and they are mostly from Sinj area , rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Split and in Sinj area. In Gornji Muć in Sinj area every twentieth inhabitant had the family name Kokan.
Prevalence
About 270 people with faimily name Kokan live in Croatia today, in 110 households. There were 150 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 80 percent. They are located in 10 Croatian counties, in 15 cities and 13 other places, mostly in Split (105), Sicane in Sinj area (30), Solin (25), Gornji Muc in Sinj area (25), and in Zagreb (20).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1923 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
