In Croatia, Kočan families are predominantly Croats (from Karlovac ), rarely Bosniaks (also from Karlovac ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Karlovac and in Bosnian Krajina (Bosanska Dubica area).
Prevalence
About 20 people with faimily name Kočan live in Croatia today, in 6 households. There were 10 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number doubled. They are located in four Croatian counties, threee cities and another small place , mostly in Karlovac (10), Virovitica (<5), Hrvatska Dubica in Hrvatska Kostajnica area (<5), and in Rijeka (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over eighty times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
