Horvat families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Cakovec. According to some sources they are from Lika, Zagreb area, Turopolje and from Hungary, very rarely Hungarians (Beli Manastir area) and Roms (Cakovec area). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Cakovec.
Prevalence
About 19900 people with faimily name Horvat live in Croatia today, in 8100 households. There were 19200 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number remains constant. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 115 cities and 1249 other places, mostly in Zagreb (3375), Cakovec (680), Osijek (500), Varazdin (445), and in Koprivnica (435).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five hundred times, the first time 1669 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
