Brnić families are usually Croats and they are mostly from Bosnian Posavina , barely Serbs. According to some sources the family name originates from Gorskog kotara. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Western Bosnia (Livno area) and in Bosanian Posavina (Odzak area). In Dobro in Western Bosnia every seventh inhabitant had the family name Brnić.
Prevalence
About 770 people with faimily name Brnić live in Croatia today, in 330 households. There were 590 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 30 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 41 cities and 65 other places, mostly in Zagreb (130), Slavonski Brod (95), Split (90), Rijeka (40), and in Velika Gorica (40).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over twenty times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
