In Croatia, Bernik families are almost entirely Croats (from Duga Resa ), very rarely Slovenes (from Vrbovsko area ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Varazdin and Zagreb. In Bela in Novi Marof every eighth inhabitant had the family name Bernik.
Prevalence
About 50 people with faimily name Bernik live in Croatia today, in 30 households. There were 40 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 40 percent. They are located in four Croatian counties, in 6 cities and threee other places, mostly in Varazdin (20), Zagreb (15), Duga Resa (<10), Muntrilj in Pazin area (<5), and in Plomin in Labin area (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over twenty times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
