Brkić families are almost entirely Croats and they are mostly from Obrovac , rarely Serbs and Bosniaks (from Bosnian Posavina ). According to some sources the family name originates from Dicma. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Osijek. In Kruševo in Obrovac every tenth inhabitant had the family name Brkić.
Prevalence
About 5200 people with faimily name Brkić live in Croatia today, in 2200 households. There were 3100 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 70 percent. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 105 cities and 457 other places, mostly in Zagreb (1285), Zadar (240), Osijek (205), Split (140), and in Vinkovci (135).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned about one hundred times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
