Biga families are mainly Serbs and they are mostly from Otocac area. According to some sources they are from Boka Kotorska, often Croats. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Otocac area and in Zagreb. In Plitvica Selo in Otocac area every sixth inhabitant had the family name Biga.
Prevalence
About 100 people with faimily name Biga live in Croatia today, in 60 households. There were 200 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number halved. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 14 cities and 12 other places, mostly in Zagreb (15), Rijeka (15), in Donji Babin Potok (10) and Gornji Babin Potok (<10) in Otocac area, and in Plaski in Slunj area (<10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 2007 in source Encyclopaedia of Croatian Surnames.
