In Croatia, Bečaj families are predominantly Croats (from Djurdjevac area ), rarely Albanians (from Rijeka ), and very rarely Bosniaks (from Opatija area ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and in Djurdjevac area.
Prevalence
About 30 people with faimily name Bečaj live in Croatia today, in 12 households. There were 20 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 110 percent. They are only located in threee Croatian cities and 7 other places, mostly in Rijeka (10), Zagreb (<10), in Podravske Sesvete (<10) and Ferdinandovac (<5) in Djurdjevac area, and in Gajec (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1917 in source List of Dignitaries, Officials and Public Servants of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia.
