Baljak families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Zadar area. According to some sources they are from Boke Kotorske, rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zadar area and in Zadar. In Poličnik in Zadar area every eighth inhabitant had the family name Baljak.
Prevalence
About 710 people with faimily name Baljak live in Croatia today, in 320 households. There were 690 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number remains constant. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 38 cities and 57 other places, mostly in Lovinac in Zadar area (185), Zadar (60), Zagreb (55), Rijeka (45), and in Mali Losinj on the Island of Losinj (40).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1926 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
