Žalac families are Croats and they are mostly from Jastrebarsko area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Jastrebarsko area and in Slunj area. In Dol in Jastrebarsko area every third inhabitant had the family name Žalac.
Prevalence
About 930 people with faimily name Žalac live in Croatia today, in 390 households. There were 850 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 10 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 51 cities and 106 other places, mostly in Zagreb (155), Karlovac (65), Dol in Jastrebarsko area (55), Slavonski Brod (35), and in Strizivojna in Djakovo area (35).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over twenty times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
