Špoljar families are Croats and they are mostly from Oroslavje area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and in Slovenia. In Peršaves in Zlatar area every seventh inhabitant had the family name Špoljar.
Prevalence
About 1500 people with faimily name Špoljar live in Croatia today, in 630 households. There were 1700 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 10 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 56 cities and 162 other places, mostly in Zagreb (405), Donja Bistra in Oroslavje area (55), Koprivnica (40), Varazdin (35), and in Djakovo (30).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over forty times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
