Šimunović families are Croats and they are mostly from middle Bosnia. According to some sources they are from west Herzegovina. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Middle Bosnia (Jajce area) and in North Herzegovina (Konjic area). In Donji Bešpelj in Middle Bosnia every fourth inhabitant had the family name Šimunović.
Prevalence
About 3600 people with faimily name Šimunović live in Croatia today, in 1400 households. There were 2100 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 70 percent. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 94 cities and 344 other places, mostly in Zagreb (590), Split (170), Dubrovnik (140), Rijeka (85), and in Sesvete (80).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over forty times, the first time 1691 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
