Šarlija families are Croats and they are mostly from Obrovac area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Benkovac area and in Zadar. In places Jasenice and Banjevci in Benkovac area every ninth inhabitant had the family name Šarlija.
Prevalence
About 650 people with faimily name Šarlija live in Croatia today, in 280 households. There were 370 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 80 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 34 cities and 35 other places, mostly in Zadar (85), Obrovac (75), Rijeka (70), Zagreb (60), and in Banjevci in Benkovac area (55).
Outside Croatia
At least six families with this surname emigrated from Croatia to: the United States (3), Germany (1), Australia (1), and to Austria (1). Family name Šarlija (including: Sarlija , Sharliiya and Sarliya ) is present in three countries on two continents.
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1691 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
