Šarac families are predominantly Croats and they are mostly from Beli Manastir area. According to some sources they are from Kastel Kambelovac. U manjem broju can be Serbs, and Bosniaks. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Split and in Herzegovina (Ljubuski area). In Mandino Selo in Western Bosnia every sixth inhabitant had the family name Šarac.
Prevalence
About 810 people with faimily name Šarac live in Croatia today, in 340 households. There were 730 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 10 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 55 cities and 78 other places, mostly in Zagreb (140), Split (65), Kucice (65), Osijek (50), and in Kastel Kambelovac (35).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over twenty times, the first time 1749 in source 18th Century Census.
