Šapina families are Croats and they are mostly from middle Bosnia. According to some sources they are from Rosko Polje near Tomislavgrad (Bosnia/Herzegovina). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Middle Bosnia (Travnik area) and in Western Bosnia (Tomislavgrad area). In places Prići and Pajić Polje in Middle Bosnia every fourth inhabitant had the family name Šapina.
Prevalence
About 610 people with faimily name Šapina live in Croatia today, in 220 households. There were 20 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number multiplied. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 42 cities and 54 other places, mostly in Zagreb (130), Sikirevci in Zupanja area (35), Resetari in Nova Gradiska area (30), Rosulje (20), and in Zadar (20).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 2007 in source Encyclopaedia of Croatian Surnames.
