Šanko families are Croats and they are mostly from the Island of Pag. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born on the Island of Pag and in Rijeka. In places Lun and Novalja on the Island of Pag every twentieth inhabitant had the family name Šanko.
Prevalence
About 160 people with faimily name Šanko live in Croatia today, in 80 households. There were 230 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 30 percent. They are located in 6 Croatian counties, in 10 cities and 8 other places, mostly in Novalja on the Island of Pag (70), Rijeka (45), Banjol on the Island of Rab (20), Zagreb (15), and in Lun on the Island of Pag (15).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1754 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
