In Croatia, Šamu families are generally Croats (from Djurdjevac area ), very rarely Hungarians (from Zupanja area ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Virovitica and in Srijem, Vojvodina.
Prevalence
About 30 people with faimily name Šamu live in Croatia today, in 13 households. There were 20 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 130 percent. They are located in 8 Croatian counties and 7 other places, mostly in Zagreb (10), Turnasica in Djurdjevac area (<10), Grubisno Polje (<5), Rijeka (<5), and in Pitomaca in Djurdjevac area (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1923 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
