Šamija families are Croats and they are mostly from Imotski area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Middle Bosnia (Vitez area) and in Imotski area. In Kratine in Middle Bosnia every third inhabitant had the family name Šamija.
Prevalence
About 300 people with faimily name Šamija live in Croatia today, in 120 households. There were 200 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 50 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 23 cities and 15 other places, mostly in Split (70), Lovrec in Imotski area (40), Dubrava (35), Zagreb (30), and in Knin (20).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 2007 in source Encyclopaedia of Croatian Surnames.
