Čelar families are frequently Croats and they are mostly from western Bosnia , less frequently Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Western Bosnia (Livno area) and in Sibenik. In Bilo Polje in Western Bosnia every fifth inhabitant had the family name Čelar.
Prevalence
About 130 people with faimily name Čelar live in Croatia today, in 60 households. There were 130 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number remains constant. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 19 cities and 12 other places, mostly in Split (25), Sibenik (20), Zagreb (15), Borovo in Vukovar area (10), and in Varazdin (10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1917 in source List of Dignitaries, Officials and Public Servants of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia.
