Čelan families are Croats and they are mostly from Omis area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Split and in Omis area.
Prevalence
About 380 people with faimily name Čelan live in Croatia today, in 150 households. There were 270 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 40 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 25 cities and 30 other places, mostly in Split (115), Cista Velika in Omis area (45), Dugopolje in Solin area (40), Zagreb (40), and in Imotski (35).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1925 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
