In Croatia, Čakan families are Croats by relative majority (from Vukovar ), less frequently Rusyns (from Vukovar area ), and very rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Vukovar area and in Zagreb. In Petrovci in Vukovar area every fiftieth inhabitant had the family name Čakan.
Prevalence
About 30 people with faimily name Čakan live in Croatia today, in 15 households. There were 20 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 60 percent. They are located in four Croatian counties, four cities and threee other places, mostly in Petrovci in Vukovar area (<10), Vukovar (<10), Klostar Ivanic in Ivanic-Grad area (<10), Mirkovci (<5), and in Pula (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
