Ćelić families are predominantly Croats and they are mostly from Imotski area , less frequently Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Metkovic and in Imotski area. In Poljica in Imotski area every seventh inhabitant had the family name Ćelić.
Prevalence
About 560 people with faimily name Ćelić live in Croatia today, in 220 households. There were 300 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 90 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 25 cities and 30 other places, mostly in Metkovic (120), Krivodol in Imotski area (95), Zagreb (65), Split (60), and in Podrujnica in Opuzen area (40).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over thirty times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
