Zekić families are usually Croats and they are mostly from Trogir area , barely Bosniaks (from east Herzegovina) and Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Middle Bosnia (Maglaj area) and in Split. In Dračevac Ninski in Zadar area every sixth inhabitant had the family name Zekić.
Prevalence
About 740 people with faimily name Zekić live in Croatia today, in 290 households. There were 270 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number more than doubled. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 50 cities and 69 other places, mostly in Split (80), Zagreb (55), Dubrovnik (45), Dracevac Ninski in Zadar area (40), and in Rijeka (40).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
