Zaharija families are Croats and they are mostly from Rijeka area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Rijeka and Pula. In Pifari in Pazin area every second inhabitant had the family name Zaharija.
Prevalence
About 330 people with faimily name Zaharija live in Croatia today, in 130 households. There were 230 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 40 percent. They are located in 7 Croatian counties, in 12 cities and 28 other places, mostly in Rovinj (50), Rijeka (30), in Soboli (30) and Podhum (25) in Rijeka area, and in Krnicari in Pazin area (25).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1929 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
