In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Sisak and in Ilok area. In Gornja Pastuša in Petrinja every seventh inhabitant had the family name Velebit.
Prevalence
About 60 people with faimily name Velebit live in Croatia today, in 40 households. There were 140 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased significantly. They are located in 8 Croatian counties, in 12 cities and 11 other places, mostly in Kutina (10), Ernestinovo in Osijek area (<10), Borovo in Vukovar area (<10), Sunja in Hrvatska Kostajnica area (<10), and in Zagreb (<10).
Outside Croatia
At least eight families with this surname emigrated from Croatia to: Switzerland (4), Australia (3), and to the United States (1). Family name Velebit is present in 12 countries worldwide. The family name "Velebit " is used by small number of people in Georgia , small number in Switzerland , and small number of people in the United States.
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
