Vegar families are Croats and they are mostly from Vrgorac. According to some sources the family name originates from France or Germany. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Vrgorac and in Herzegovina (Ljubuski area). In Prapatnice in Vrgorac every eighth inhabitant had the family name Vegar.
Prevalence
About 140 people with faimily name Vegar live in Croatia today, in 70 households. There were 100 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 50 percent. They are located in 10 Croatian counties, in 13 cities and 21 other places, mostly in Prapatnice (20), Zagreb (20), Vrgorac (15), Split (15), and in Stilja (<10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 2007 in source Encyclopaedia of Croatian Surnames.
