Vasilj families are Croats and they are mostly from Herzegovina. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Herzegovina (Citluk area) and in Herzegovina (Mostar area). In places Međugorje and Miletina in Herzegovina every fourth inhabitant had the family name Vasilj.
Prevalence
About 440 people with faimily name Vasilj live in Croatia today, in 190 households. There were 80 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number multiplied. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 35 cities and 31 other places, mostly in Zagreb (145), Kutjevo in Orahovica area (50), Vinkovci (45), Donji Muc in Sinj area (30), and in Split (25).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
