Varnica families are almost entirely Croats and they are mostly from Vrlika , rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Sibenik and Vrlika. In Podosoje in Vrlika every eighth inhabitant had the family name Varnica.
Prevalence
About 270 people with faimily name Varnica live in Croatia today, in 110 households. There were 140 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number doubled. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 20 cities and 18 other places, mostly in Split (45), Sibenik (30), Podosoje (25), Knin (15), and in Djakovo (10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1917 in source List of Dignitaries, Officials and Public Servants of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia.
