Varga families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Cakovec. According to some sources they are from Bjelovar or Zlatar area, rarely Hungarians from Beli Manastir area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Cakovec and Zagreb. In Salinovec in Ivanec every ninth inhabitant had the family name Varga.
Prevalence
About 2800 people with faimily name Varga live in Croatia today, in 1200 households. There were 3000 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 10 percent. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 76 cities and 284 other places, mostly in Zagreb (395), Cakovec (200), Osijek (160), Zlatar (75), and in Varazdin (65).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over forty times, the first time 1669 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
