Tomić families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from middle Bosnia. According to some sources they are from Kosovo Polja, Tomislavgrad or Imotski area, rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Split and Zagreb. In Donje Pećine in Middle Bosnia every second inhabitant had the family name Tomić.
Prevalence
About 9200 people with faimily name Tomić live in Croatia today, in 3900 households. There were 4500 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number doubled. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 118 cities and 701 other places, mostly in Zagreb (1610), Split (740), Rijeka (375), Osijek (195), and in Cara on the Island of Korcula (185).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over two hundred times, the first time 1516 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
