Toma families are often Croats and they are mostly from Novi Marof , rarely Hungarians and Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Varazdin and Novi Marof. In Grana in Novi Marof every ninth inhabitant had the family name Toma.
Prevalence
About 170 people with faimily name Toma live in Croatia today, in 60 households. There were 100 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 70 percent. They are located in 10 Croatian counties, in 13 cities and 21 other places, mostly in Grana (40), Zagreb (25), Bobota in Vukovar area (15), Novi Marof (10), and in Gornje Makojisce (10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over twenty times, the first time 1749 in source 18th Century Census.
