Smiljanić families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Djurdjevac area , often Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Virovitica. In Krbava in Obrovac area every third inhabitant had the family name Smiljanić.
Prevalence
About 990 people with faimily name Smiljanić live in Croatia today, in 490 households. There were 1400 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 30 percent. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 55 cities and 121 other places, mostly in Zagreb (260), Rijeka (55), Osijek (45), Bjelovar (30), and in Karlovac (25).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over thirty times, the first time 1749 in source 18th Century Census.
