In Croatia, Sekul families are generally Croats (from the Island of Brac ), very rarely Slovenes (from Split ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Split and on the Island of Brac. In Bobovišća on the Island of Brac every ninth inhabitant had the family name Sekul.
Prevalence
About 50 people with faimily name Sekul live in Croatia today, in 30 households. There were 60 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 20 percent. They are located in four Croatian counties and 7 other places, mostly in Split (20), in Bobovisca (<10) and Lozisca (<10) on the Island of Brac, Vela Luka on the Island of Korcula (<5), and in Postira on the Island of Brac (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1928 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
