Rako families are Croats and they are mostly from Makarska area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Makarska area and in Split. In Sebešić in Middle Bosnia every fourth inhabitant had the family name Rako.
Prevalence
About 470 people with faimily name Rako live in Croatia today, in 180 households. There were 290 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 60 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 33 cities and 40 other places, mostly in Split (130), Zagreb (65), Sumet in Imotski area (55), Zagvozd in Makarska area (30), and in Ivanovac in Osijek area (15).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
