Pupovac families are mainly Serbs and they are mostly from Benkovac , whereas often Croats (Zadar area). According to some sources they are from Istria. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Benkovac and Zadar. In Bilišane in Obrovac every seventh inhabitant had the family name Pupovac.
Prevalence
About 410 people with faimily name Pupovac live in Croatia today, in 230 households. There were 520 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 20 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 29 cities and 35 other places, mostly in Zadar (60), Rijeka (55), Zagreb (30), Brsadin in Vukovar area (25), and in Privlaka in Zadar area (20).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1928 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
