Popović families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Opuzen area. According to some sources they are from the Island of Hvar, often Serbs, very rarely Montenegrins (Cetinj, Montenegro). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Split. In Kopito in Podrinje (Bosnia) every second inhabitant had the family name Popović.
Prevalence
About 6200 people with faimily name Popović live in Croatia today, in 2900 households. There were 7600 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 20 percent. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 109 cities and 542 other places, mostly in Zagreb (1185), Split (310), Rijeka (270), Osijek (185), and in Opuzen (170).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over three hundred times, the first time 1749 in source 18th Century Census.
