In Croatia, Pilj families are Croats (from Valpovo area ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Valpovo area and in Osijek. In Novaki Bizovački in Valpovo area every seventh inhabitant had the family name Pilj.
Prevalence
About 50 people with faimily name Pilj live in Croatia today, in 20 households. There were 60 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 10 percent. They are located in four Croatian counties, four cities and four other places, mostly in Zagreb (15), Split (15), Brodjanci in Valpovo area (10), Metkovic (<5), and in Novaki Bizovacki in Valpovo area (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
