In Croatia, Pešelj families are predominantly Croats (from the Island of Korcule ), rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born on the Island of Korcula and in Osijek area.
Prevalence
About 30 people with faimily name Pešelj live in Croatia today, in 12 households. There were 40 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 30 percent. They are located in only five naselja i to in Smokvica on the Island of Korcula (30), Porec (<5), Rijeka (<5), Ernestinovo in Osijek area (<5), and in Dracevac (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
