Penić families are largely Croats and they are mostly from Jastrebarsko area , rarely Serbs. According to some sources the family name originates from Trogir area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Sinj and in Jastrebarsko area. In Bajagić in Sinj every fourth inhabitant had the family name Penić.
Prevalence
About 960 people with faimily name Penić live in Croatia today, in 370 households. There were 710 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 40 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 46 cities and 57 other places, mostly in Krasic in Jastrebarsko area (130), Bajagic (125), Zagreb (125), Sinj (55), and in Split (50).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over forty times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
