Orelj families are mainly Serbs and they are mostly from Obrovac area , whereas often Croats (from Nova Gradiska ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Obrovac area and in Nova Gradiska.
Prevalence
About 70 people with faimily name Orelj live in Croatia today, in 30 households. There were 130 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number halved. They are located in 10 Croatian counties, in 11 cities and 14 other places, mostly in Sisak (<10), Nova Gradiska (<10), Zagreb (<10), Stikada in Obrovac area (<10), and in Bapca (<10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
