Mrkonjić families are usually Croats and they are mostly from Imotski area , barely Serbs and Bosniaks (iz Tuzla Region, Bosnia). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Split and in Tuzla Region, Bosnia (Tuzla area).
Prevalence
About 1000 people with faimily name Mrkonjić live in Croatia today, in 410 households. There were 380 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number more than doubled. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 41 cities and 89 other places, mostly in Zagreb (160), Zmijavci in Imotski area (110), Split (85), Babina Greda in Zupanja area (70), and in Osijek (60).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
