In Croatia, Mezei families are mainly Croats (from Osijek area ), less frequently Hungarians (from Vinkovci area ), and very rarely Romanians (from Dubrovnik area ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Dubrovnik and in Vinkovci area.
Prevalence
About 10 people with faimily name Mezei live in Croatia today, in 6 households. There were 10 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number remains constant. They are located in four Croatian counties, two cities and four other places, mostly in Mlini in Dubrovnik area (10), Beli Manastir (<5), in Bilje (<5) and Laslovo (<5) in Osijek area, and in Zagreb (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1917 in source List of Dignitaries, Officials and Public Servants of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia.
