Mavar families are Croats and they are mostly from Zadar. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zadar and Rijeka. In Rava in Zadar every seventh inhabitant had the family name Mavar.
Prevalence
About 110 people with faimily name Mavar live in Croatia today, in 70 households. There were 150 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 30 percent. They are located in 7 Croatian counties, in 9 cities and 17 other places, mostly in Zadar (30), Zagreb (20), Rijeka (<10), Opatija (<10), and in Kastav (<10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1933 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
